Our maps of routes through the passage - today's route, first route discovered by Roald Amundsen, the deep water route, and the west-east route first travelled by RCMPV St. Roch.

RCMPV ST. ROCH
Between 1940 and 1942 St. Roch navigated the Northwest Passage. It was the second ship to make the passage, and the first to travel the passage from west to east.


ST. ROCH II EXPEDITION
On December 15, 2000, After 169 days and 24,000 nautical miles, the St. Roch II arrived in Victoria, British Columbia, after sailing through the Northwest Passage and then all the way around North America.

ROALD AMUNDSEN'S DISCOVERY OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE
From Amundsen's diary: "The North West Passage was done. My boyhood dream - at that moment it was accomplished. A strange feeling welled up in my throat; I was somewhat over-strained and worn - it was weakness in me - but I felt tears in my eyes. 'Vessel in sight' ... Vessel in sight."

SEDNA IV SAILS THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE
After two years of intense efforts and negotiations, and a five month journey, the Sedna IV sailed into Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ending a voyage through the famous Northwest Passage.

The expedition was put together by Sir Allen Young in the hope that the yacht would be able to break through the ice-bound Northwest Passage in one season and maybe uncover further details of the fate of Sir John Franklin.

EXPLORATION OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE
While most of their travels remain undocumented, the Inuit and other aboriginal groups are considered the first explorers of the "Northwest Passage" and many other northern areas.

THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE AND THE SEARCH FOR FRANKLIN
After Franklin's disappearance from view in July 1845 many months passed before any concern was expressed for the safety of him and his crews as he was well provisioned and there was no serious expectation that the cruise could be completed in one season.
